FraudLens
A scam checker for Mauritius. Paste a suspicious message, link or email, in Kreol, French or English, and it shows the warning signs before you click or pay.
A quick walkthrough: the website checks a mixed Kreol message, then the browser extension and the Outlook add-in give the same answer inside the tools people already use.
How it works
AI helps read the message; clear rules decide whether it's a scam.
Check anywhere
Paste into the website, or check from the browser or Outlook.
Next.js + OutlookProtect privacy
Personal details are removed before anything is analysed.
Node.jsFind warning signs
Looks for fake links, urgency and Kreol scam phrases.
Python + AIGive a verdict
Rules weigh the evidence and explain the result in plain words.
Rules engineThe website, the browser extension and the Outlook add-in all use the same checker, so they always agree. AI helps read the language, but clear rules make the final call.
01 Problem
Why this exists
Scam messages in Mauritius often mix Kreol, French and English, pretend to be familiar local banks and services, and arrive in the apps people use every day. Generic filters miss that local context or give a score with no explanation, when people need clear reasons before they reply, click or pay.
My team, Dhruv & Friends, and I started FraudLens at the 2026 Finnovate Web & AI Hackathon, and we won first place. It checks messages, links, emails and documents. AI helps read the message, but a clear set of rules makes the final decision.
02 My part
What I built
Taught the system to understand Kreol, including spelling variations and mixed-language messages.
Built the scoring logic that turns warning signs into a clear verdict and practical advice.
Built the Outlook add-in, so people can check an email without leaving their inbox.
Kept the AI to a narrow job, pointing out suspicious phrases, while the rules decide.
03 Approach
How I approached it
Kreol first
Treat Kreol as a main language, not an afterthought that gets translated first.
Show the reasons
Every warning points to the exact words, links or details you can check yourself.
One checker, many places
The website, browser extension and Outlook add-in all give the same answer.
04 Result
Where it is now
A live, multilingual scam checker for Mauritius on the web, in the browser and in Outlook. During our final presentation, we opened a fake Google sign-up page live, and FraudLens flagged it as not genuine.
FraudLens points out warning signs and suggests next steps; it can't prove that something is a scam. The language examples are open to review and still need more checking by people.
Next: Offer the checker to businesses for their email and browser tools, where an instant, explained check could stop costly mistakes and support staff training.
